Analyza Shimushit (Applied Analysis) 88-234
This is a one semester course with a weekly
two hour lecture and a weekly one hour recitation.
During the semester I distributed 4 exercise sets, each
covering 3-4 lectures-worth of material.
Most of the exercises are home-grown; a few were taken from books.
If you have a postscript viewer (ghostview, xps or the like)
you can dowload the following files:
- Syllabus Hebrew.
- Syllabus Hebrew; shortened version for Bar-Ilan
catalog, only 10 lines allowed.
- Detailed outline English. This is not a
document intended for students; it was written as a guide for the
other lecturers teaching this course in parallel with me, and I
hope might help other people planning/teaching similar courses.
- Partial Sums of Fourier Series Handout
This handout shows plots of the sums of the first 10,30,100,500 terms
in the Fourier series of a square wave.
- Gibbs Phenomenon Handout
Close-ups of the plots in the previous handout, showing
the Gibbs' phenomenon.
- Partial Sums of Legendre Series Handout I
This handout shows the degree 61 polynomial which is the
sum of the first 61 terms in the Legendre series for a step function
on the interval [-1,1]. Note the size of the coefficients, which makes
it very hard to plot this accurately. Warning! This handout does
not look good on the screen as it uses small fonts; print it out
on a good laser printer.
- Partial Sums of Legendre Series Handout II
This handout shows plots of the sums of the first 21,41,61 terms
in the Legendre series for a step function
on the interval [-1,1]. There are two plots for the 61 term case,
one using standard precision (turns out awful), one done using exact
arithemtic.
