Potential Topics for Student Projects

These projects are open for undergraduates or non-thesis M.Sc. students who are looking to complete their project requirements.

Data Science/Machine Learning: What Differentiates Social and Individual Animals?

We have tracking data of locust nymphs moving in an enclosed areas (thanks to the efforts of Prof. Amir Ayali’s lab at Tel Aviv University). The data comes from groups that are different from each other: locusts that were raised together, and locusts that were raised separately (i.e., as individuals). We’d like to know if their motions are distinct, and if so, how.

Tools: machine learning and data mining algorithms, and lots of patience.

Data Science/Machine Learning: How does an insect think?

Using the data above, we’d like to build a model of the indivual locust decision making. We prefer a model that is transparent (e.g., a state-machine or decision-tree), but even a blackbox model would be useful. The model would be used to predict insect motion in simulations.

Tools: machine learning, sequential pattern data mining, grammar induction
